Low-Noise Laser and Heater Drivers for Data-Center Photonics

The challenge

A startup building high-power laser sources on photonic integrated circuits for data-center networking needed driver electronics to match. The lasers need very low-noise, highly efficient current drive, and each module also needs many precision heater channels to tune the optics. All of it had to fit a compact form factor with a credible path to low cost at very high volumes.

What we did

We compared candidate driver architectures on efficiency, noise, stability and cost. To explore the options properly we built an automated simulation setup and ran tens of thousands of circuit simulations across component choices and operating conditions. That pointed to parts that improved performance while lowering cost per channel. We set bench acceptance criteria, planned a single-channel prototype to confirm the results in hardware, and laid out a preliminary control board for multi-channel testing. See our circuit board design service.

The result

The study identified a driver design that met the noise targets at substantially lower cost per channel than the starting design, giving the client clear data for its next hardware decisions.
